Motivational Interviewing

Boosting Engagement and Progress in Psychotherapy Through Motivational Interviewing

Date: Friday, June 23rd, 2023
Times: 9:00am CST to 5:00pm CST
Location: Zoom
Trainers: David Roberts, PhD
Eligibility: Mental health clinicians, students, interns, residents, fellows, and other trainees practicing psychotherapy/counseling.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counseling approach to promote engagement and motivation among clients who want or need to make a behavior change. MI uses a set of specific, teachable techniques within a non-judgmental atmosphere to recognize and validate clients’ location on the continuum of sustain-to-change, to increase clients’ willingness to discuss their potential change, and to stir intrinsic motivation within the client to take action toward growth and health. MI has been shown to improve engagement in care, motivation, behavior change, and outcomes across a range of health conditions, including depression and anxiety. MI can be delivered flexibly, in as little as a single meeting or over a long-term helping relationship.

The current course describes applications of MI to enhance engagement and outcomes in psychotherapy. The training covers the core elements of MI, including MI Spirit, OARS, Rolling with Resistance and Evoking Change Talk. The course emphasizes methods for using MI in psychotherapy and as psychotherapy. Methods of teaching include lecture, video demonstration, modeling, group exercises, performance feedback, roleplay, Q&A and discussion.
